Jesus’ First Healing in Mark
This meditation is based on a passage for July 11, 2010 in the Daily Lectionary Year 2 from the Book of Common Worship for the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) (1993).
Text: Mark 1:21-27
Reflection and Question: One of the hallmarks of Mark’s Gospel is the speed of the action. Even in the very first chapter, John has preached and been arrested. Then Jesus begins to preach, calls disciples and conducts his first exorcism. That Jesus heals on the Sabbath is not controversial yet. For Mark, the remarkable aspect of Jesus in the synagogue is not the miraculous healing but rather the authority and self-confidence with which Jesus teaches and acts. Those who witness this are not afraid or suspicious. They are simply amazed. When were you amazed at God’s good power?
Prayer: Holy Jesus, may Your words and actions be as fresh for us as they were for the people of Capernaum when You began Your ministry with teaching and healing in the synagogue. Use our amazement to strengthen our love for You and our neighbor. Amen.
